Cookie Notice

Cookies are text files containing small amounts of information which are downloaded to your device, or more technically, to the browser that you use on that device, when you visit a site. The entity that places cookies on your browser can then read the information on that cookie that it set. Cookies are typically classified as either "session cookies" which do not stay on your device after you close your browser or "persistent cookies" which will usually remain on your device until you delete them or they expire.

When you access the UKTV website at and any of our associated websites (as defined below), services and applications including UKTV Play (the "UKTV Digital Services"), we use and allow certain other companies to use cookies to understand your use of our UKTV Digital Services; to improve your user experience and enable personalised features and content; to optimise our advertisements and marketing; and to enable us or our advertising partners to assist us in serving ads specific to your interests.

You can find more information about cookies at:

Our use of cookies

Different cookies are used to perform different functions which we explain below.

We use cookies that are essential

Some cookies are essential in order to enable you to move around our websites and use their features, such as accessing secure areas of the website. Without these cookies, services like enabling appropriate content based on your type of device cannot be provided. Typically, these would do things like enable mobile phone users to use the UKTV Digital Services or enable error reporting/debugging.

We use cookies to remember your selections

These cookies allow us to remember choices you make on our websites (such as the country you are in) and provide enhanced, more personal features. These cookies can also be used to remember changes you have made to text size, fonts and other parts of web pages that you can customise. They may also be used to provide services you have asked for such remembering your video preferences such as volume control and use of subtitles or audio description, enabling video parental control or remembering previous video settings and use so you can resume watching from this point if you leave video on-demand service part way through an episode and return to it later. The information these cookies collect may be anonymised and they cannot track your browsing activity on other websites.

We use cookies to personalise your experience

We also use cookies to change the way our UKTV Digital Services behave or look in order to personalise your experience from information we infer from your behaviour on our UKTV Digital Services or information we already know about you e.g. because you are a registered customer. These cookies may be used to tailor the services you receive from us or the content, look and feel delivered to you on subsequent sessions to our UKTV Digital Services. For example, if you personalise webpages, or register for products or services, a cookie helps our webpage server to recall your specific information. When you next visit our websites, the information you previously provided can be retrieved, so you can easily use the website features that you previously chose. Even if you use more than one device or computer on a regular basis, we can link cookies together so you will still receive a personalised online experience.

We can also personalise the information you see based on what we already know about you, so that you spend less time looking for things. So, instead of one digital service for all users, each user can have an experience which is unique to them.

We use cookies for performance and analytics purposes

We use our own cookies and/or third party cookies to see how you use our UKTV Digital Services in order to enhance their performance and develop them according to the taste of our customers and visitors. For example, cookies may be used to: test different designs and ensure that a consistent look and feel is maintained for users of our UKTV Digital Services; track and provide trend analysis on how our users interact with UKTV Digital Services and communications; track errors and measure the effectiveness of our promotional campaigns.

The data collected will generally be aggregated to provide trends and usage patterns for business analysis, site/platform improvement and performance metrics. Our cookies or the resulting analysis may be also shared with our business partners or advertisers. The type of information we collect includes how many visitors visit our UKTV Digital Services, how many customers log in, when they visited, for how long and which areas of our UKTV Digital Services they used but is not used to identify you individually.

For example, we use Google Analytics to provide anonymised statistical information for us. This information also allows us to determine if we are hitting our target audience. If we didn't have these measurement tools to enable us to get our sums right on the advertising we would have less money to spend on improving our digital content and it would be much harder for us to learn what people do or don't enjoy about the UKTV Digital Services.

To opt out of these analytics cookies, please do so by clicking on the link below:

We use cookies for targeted advertising purposes

We work with third-party advertising companies to serve ads while you are using our UKTV Digital Services and permit these companies to place and access their own cookies on your computer in the course of serving ads on our UKTV Digital Services. These companies may use information obtained through their cookie (which does not include your name, address, e-mail address or telephone number) about your visits to our and other websites, in combination with information about your purchases and interests from other online sites in order to provide advertising that is most relevant and useful to you. This is known as "interest-based advertising" or "targeted" advertising. Other companies' use of their cookies is subject to their own privacy policies and not ours.

We also allow data providers to use cookies on UKTV Digital Services to help us deliver our own content and advertising, and measure the effectiveness of our advertising campaigns. These cookies may reflect de-identified demographic or other data linked to data you voluntarily have submitted to us, e.g., your email address or gender, that we may share with data providers solely in hashed, non-human readable form. If you are a registered user, the information collected from our UKTV Digital Services is not anonymous and we may use this information along with other information we know or infer about you including your preferences to tailor content, services, advertising and offers for you.

You can opt out of receiving interest based advertising on our UKTV Digital Services by blocking these cookies as described in "Controlling your Cookies" Section below. Please also read below about advertising cookies used by third parties.

Third Party Advertising Cookies and Social Media Cookies

We do allow advertisers and other third parties to place cookies on our UKTV Digital Services to allow them to show you adverts both on and off our UKTV Digital Services that are more relevant and useful to you. However, we do not share any information with these advertisers and third parties that will directly identify you. These advertisers and other third-parties (including the ad networks, ad-serving companies, and other service providers they may use) may assume that users who interact with or click on a personalised ad or content are part of the group - towards which the ad or content is directed towards.

The types of cookies used by these third parties and how they use the information generated by them will be governed by those companies' privacy policies. For more information on our interest based advertising partners and on how to opt out of targeting advertising, please see the "Controlling your Cookies" Section below.

Controlling Your Cookies

In order to place cookies on your device, we require your consent which we will obtain when you first visit one of our UKTV Digital Services If you don't want to allow cookies, refer to your browser settings. The most popular browsers (e.g. Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari) allow you to a) see what cookies you've got and delete them individually; b) accept or block either all cookies or cookies from particular sites; c) notify you when a cookie is issued, or d) delete all cookies when you close your browser.

Warning: Be aware that if you choose not to receive cookies at any time, our UKTV Digital Services may not function properly and certain services will not be provided, spoiling your experience of not just our UKTV Digital Services but other websites as well. For example, preferences may be lost, which could include any cookie opt outs you have exercised. Each browser is different, so check the "Help" menu of your browser to learn how to change your cookie preferences.

Managing Advertising Cookies

If you wish to opt out from receiving targeting advertising from third parties, listed below are the main advertising networks used on our UKTV Digital Services and a link to their privacy policy and the part of their website that allows you to opt out. Please note that if you want to opt out from receiving targeted advertising, this does not mean that you will receive less advertising when you use our UKTV Digital Services or other services. This just means that the advertising you see may not be as relevant to you.

Please note that the above is not an exhaustive list and is updated by us from time to time.
